When you’re building a soul-aligned business, one of the most important things you can do is learn how to make decisions that truly feel right for you. Not based on fear. Not based on trends. Not even based on logic alone. But decisions that are fully aligned with your energy, your truth, and your emotional clarity. And that’s where your Human Design authority comes in.

Your authority is your inner compass—it shows you how you are meant to make decisions. It’s not one-size-fits-all. It’s personal, and it’s powerful. When you understand your authority, you begin to see why certain decisions have felt off in the past and how to start making choices that support your growth, your brand, and your business in a deeply aligned way.

What Is Authority in Human Design?

In Human Design, your authority is your decision-making GPS. It tells you how your body and energy are designed to say “yes” or “no.” Rather than relying on your mind (which is full of conditioning), you’re invited to trust your body’s intelligence—through your authority.

There are several types of authority, and each one operates differently. Some people are here to wait for emotional clarity. Others get instant gut responses. Some need to talk it out or wait for invitations. Each one has a unique path to alignment.

Understanding your authority isn’t just interesting—it’s practical. It helps you:

  • Say yes to opportunities that are truly meant for you
  • Build a brand that feels like you rather than what others expect
  • Avoid burnout, confusion, and second-guessing
  • Honour your pace and rhythm in business decisions

Let’s dive into the most common types, starting with the most misunderstood—and most important for many of you reading this.

Emotional Authority: Leading Through Emotional Frequency

If you have Emotional Authority, like I do, this means you’re not here to make decisions in the moment. Your clarity doesn’t come instantly. It comes over time. It requires you to feel through a decision, riding the emotional wave, until you reach a sense of calm or neutrality.

This isn’t about waiting forever or getting lost in overthinking. It’s about honouring your emotional process. The truth is: if your nervous system is dysregulated or if you’ve learned to suppress your feelings, it can be hard to access your emotional clarity. That’s why emotional sovereignty—knowing how to feel, process, and lead with your emotional truth—is essential.

This is at the core of what I call Emotional Frequency Leadership. It’s not just about feeling all the things. It’s about becoming attuned to the right frequency—your truth beneath the noise. When you build your brand and make business decisions from that space, everything becomes more magnetic.

You start:

  • Saying no to things that drain you
  • Crafting offers that reflect your depth
  • Creating content that speaks from the heart
  • Attracting clients who resonate with your emotional honesty

This way of leading might feel slower at first. But over time, as your emotional awareness sharpens and your nervous system finds stability, the clarity comes more quickly. You learn which emotional waves to wait out—and when the calm certainty arises, you know it’s a full-body yes.

This is the true power of branding through Emotional Authority. You’re not following formulas. You’re transmitting truth.

Sacral Authority: Trusting the Gut Response

If you have Sacral Authority, your clarity is instant. You’ll feel a response in your gut—a physical sensation that either opens you up with energy (yes!) or contracts you (no). It’s not logical. It’s instinctive.

When you’re building your brand with Sacral Authority, your job is to stay present and respond to the world around you. Ask yourself yes/no questions: Do I want to launch this offer? Do I want to work with this person? Let your body respond.

This authority shines when your brand process includes:

  • Creating content based on what excites you in the moment
  • Making fast pivots when something no longer lights you up
  • Following the pull of what energises you, not what drains you

The more you trust your sacral response, the more magnetic your business becomes.

Splenic Authority: The Quiet Whisper of Instinct

Splenic Authority is all about instinct. It’s a quiet, intuitive knowing that speaks once—often softly, and in the present moment. If this is your authority, clarity comes instantly, but not emotionally. It’s a subtle sense of “this is right” or “this is off.”

Branding with Splenic Authority means:

  • Making decisions quickly and intuitively
  • Trusting your spontaneous urges to act
  • Not waiting for logical reasons—just following what feels safe and right

You might not always be able to explain why a decision feels right. That’s okay. When you follow your splenic cues, your brand stays in integrity with your deeper wisdom.

Ego Authority: Willpower and Identity

There are two types here—Ego Manifested and Ego Projected. In both cases, your decision-making is rooted in what you desire and what aligns with your identity.

You’re meant to ask: What do I want? What feels aligned with my heart? What strengthens my will and brings me joy?

In branding, Ego Authority leads the way when you:

  • Make bold moves based on your desire to express yourself fully
  • Build offers around what you love doing, not what’s expected
  • Trust that when your heart is in it, the right people will feel it

Self-Projected Authority: Speaking Your Truth

If you’re Self-Projected, your authority lives in your voice. You find clarity by hearing yourself talk. It’s not about asking for advice—it’s about letting your own words guide you back to your truth.

When creating your brand:

  • Speak your ideas out loud—record yourself, talk to a trusted friend
  • Listen to how you feel as you speak: Is there alignment? Excitement?
  • Let your message come through naturally, not forced

You’ll find that the more you express your truth, the more resonance you’ll create with others.

Mental Authority: Environmental Clarity

This is only for Projectors. With Mental Authority, you need to talk things through in the right environment. You’re not here to make decisions alone—you gain clarity by being around the right people and places.

Branding through Mental Authority means:

  • Placing yourself in inspiring environments
  • Having soundboards—people who won’t push you but reflect your words back
  • Giving yourself time to think aloud and find resonance

Your clarity doesn’t come from emotions or instinct. It comes from dialogue and space.

No Inner Authority (Reflectors): Lunar Wisdom

If you’re a Reflector, you don’t have inner authority in the traditional sense. You’re here to wait a full lunar cycle (about 28 days) for major decisions. You reflect the energy around you, so your clarity builds over time and through environment.

In branding and business:

  • Give yourself time and space for big decisions
  • Tune into your environment—your brand will reflect your surroundings
  • Avoid pressure to rush. Your wisdom deepens with time

What About Secondary or Tertiary Authorities?

While most Human Design teachings focus on your primary authority, it’s important to understand that you may have other centres defined—like the Sacral or Spleen—that still play a role in your decision-making process. These act as secondary or tertiary authorities, and they can provide additional layers of clarity after your main authority has been consulted.

For example, if you have Emotional Authority (which is always the dominant authority if your emotional solar plexus is defined), that must come first. Your emotions will colour everything—your instincts, your gut feelings, even your mental clarity. If you also have a defined Spleen or Sacral centre, you can absolutely tune into those nudges after you’ve moved through your emotional wave.

Let’s say your emotional wave has settled and you’re in a neutral place—then your splenic instinct might whisper a quiet yes or no. Or your sacral might give you a buzz of energy or a gut-level pull. But if you’re riding a high or stuck in an emotional low, those signals might be distorted. That’s why you wait, feel it through, and only then pay attention to those other inner cues.

This layered understanding gives you a more holistic way to make decisions—especially in business, where multiple factors come into play. When you respect the hierarchy of your authorities, you’ll notice fewer regrets and more clarity.

Why Authority Is Essential for Branding

Whether you’re emotionally defined or splenic, self-projected or sacral—your authority is sacred. It shows you how to stay true to yourself. And when you align with it, your brand no longer feels like a performance. It feels like home.
